About us?
There are two main problems with modern journalism: As Noam Chomsky puts it, “First, the press is owned by wealthy men that have every interest in not having certain things appear, and second, the whole educational system from the beginning on through gets people to understand that there are certain things one doesn’t say.”
We seek to turn this filtered and corporatized system on its head: The Antrum is an independent and unfiltered newspaper that aims to question commonplace views and groupthink and illuminate overlooked stories. By manufacturing dissent, we can spark alternative opinions and lead the general public on a more informed path.
The Antrum, or The Cave in English, references Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, where prisoners are confined to a dark cave, only seeing shadows cast on the wall by objects behind them. One day, a prisoner’s shackles are broken, freeing him from the darkness and allowing him to enter the real world. As he adjusts to the light and learns of the world outside of the cave, he returns to the others, pleading to the prisoners to escape: to no avail, they vehemently refuse. While Plato assigned the escapee as a philosopher, intending to enlighten those who won’t, the Antrum seeks to take a similar stance, enlightening the world of the very information that they refuse—separating fact from fiction.
